Crypto Billionaire Matthew Mellon Recounts How XRP Rescued Him During a Banking Crisis

Cryptocurrency researcher SMQKE recently shared an obscure video clip on X. The footage features banking heir and former Ripple Labs global ambassador Matthew Mellon explaining how XRP sustained his finances during the 2015 Greek banking crisis. Mellon shared the story live on Fox Business shortly after appearing on the cover of Forbes.

During the summer of 2015, the financial system in Greece collapsed in real time. Banks closed their doors, ATMs across Athens ran out of euros, and capital controls immobilized money for millions of citizens, as well as tourists visiting the Greek islands.

Cards Refused, ATMs Empty

While vacationing in Mykonos with his family as the crisis hit the beaches, Mellon tried using his credit card at a restaurant, only to have it declined. He then checked local ATMs, but every machine he located was entirely out of euros.

When he asked if the restaurant would accept Bitcoin, they declined, stating they only accepted XRP, the digital currency created by Chris Larsen of Ripple Labs.

“Thanks to XRP, Ripple Labs, I was able to pay my restaurant, my taxi and my hotel bill,” Mellon explained during the broadcast.

Mobile Wallets vs. Banks

When the interviewer asked what the situation signified for the broader financial system, Mellon offered a definitive view.

“It’s turning into like the mobile wallets versus banks,” he stated. “You control your own money. You don’t need a bank.”

After the anchor proposed that a similar scenario could happen again if traditional banks became insolvent, Mellon immediately agreed.

He also noted that conditions on the island grew increasingly tense, describing the airport as chaotic as travelers scrambled to depart. “It was quite terrifying,” he said. “Even at the airport was turning into a mob scene just to get off the island.” He expressed deep sympathy for local Greek residents navigating the economic collapse, adding, “My heart really goes out to the people.”

A Clip Resurfacing Now

The footage predates mainstream awareness of XRP by several years, stemming from a period when the digital asset remained largely unfamiliar outside of early cryptocurrency circles. SMQKE pointed out that very few individuals had viewed the footage prior to its recirculation.

This interview remains one of the earliest documented instances of XRP serving as a practical financial tool amid a genuine crisis, captured live on television by a high-profile individual.
